Scoops

Posted by: Ian In: iPhone

From the maker of the popular free puzzle game Hanoi, Scoops puts you in control of a towering stack of ice cream scoops! Stack your cone high into the sky by tilting the phone left and right, catching as many scoops as you can while avoiding the vegetables (veggies are great separate from ice cream!). The higher you go, the faster they fall, and the more wobbly your tower! Stack similar colors together for extra points. Can you stack your cone to the MOON? Throw on some tunes in iPod, and start stacking!

Features:
- Tilt based controls
- Color matching bonuses
- Local high scores
- Pause on touch, and during iPod controls
- Starts out easy and relaxing, ends challenging and fast paced

“Scoops is one of those games that you think — wow, that’s simple, no problem. But the game is more difficult, and a lot more fun, than it would seems.” - 148apps

Stacking scoops of ice cream has never been so much fun. Even when a tomato drops by to ruin the day, you’ll find a little iPhone gem in this little game. - we play iPhone

Please remove the “German” translation for this game (help text, other ingame-texts, AppStore-description). If you can’t speak German that’s ok, but don’t let the translation do automatically, because the resulting text is absolutely not readable/understandable.

Love the game! Got any suggestions for a non-programmer looking to make their own simple game? I’ve been more on the design side of things but would love to give it a shot. I am pretty adept at learning new things. Thanks!

I have a question,

in an update down the road, you have to add these!!!

1) Stack to Mars and all the planets!!
2) Probably more vegetables
3) unique ice cream scoops that drop rarely like (cookie dough, chocolate chip etc)

Just wanted to say thanks for this simple but addictive and cool game!

And is there any way I could contact you via e-mail?

I have some ideas I’d love to develop into games but I’m more the art side, can’t quite get my head around the app developing.

thanks!

This game is really fun. Me and my girlfriend compete all the time. But I would really like the highscores to be able for us to enter our name in, so we know who got what score. Because right now we have to remember and keep track who has the leading scores.

Thanks!

Hey, I really like your game, but I think the latest update to the ice cream scoops makes the game a bit ugly and cluttered. I’d appreciate an option to turn it off, as I liked the simple, solid tone scoops.

For the high scores, maybe make the newest one a different color. Sometimes I don’t remember what my score was so it’s hard to tell if I beat my old one.

Other than that, awesome job! Love the new scoop flavors.

I and my wife play very often, there is really a great pastime.
Now competing for the best score (my wife yesterday 165.000, it’s good? :-)
There will be in a future a world rankings, on the Internet?
We also like to see some new vegetable, peppers, eggplant, etc. :-)
Congratulations again, really well done and immediate, continues!

What happened to the orange scoops? =[
And for another vegetable, a head of cabbage would fit in shape wise.

Hey Cutter, the orange scoops looked pretty similar to the yellow scoops, and some people were requesting chocolate so I swapped it in for the orange. Great idea on the cabbage, I hadn’t even thought of that. The Scoops solar system is similar to the real solar system… :)

One comment, though — please, please, please make it save game progress!
I have lost few high scores when call comes through, as game stops.
Also, sometimes you just have to turn the phone off and lose the game in progress.

Thanks again,

ian -

a fantastic game. love that i can make a cone out into space. a suggestion and a question. first, it would be great if the game could be remembered even if the button is hit on the iphone that causes it to leave the app.

and the question - i see the bonus go up and down depending on the scoops that i get. there is also a bar on that expands and contracts. i see it contract even when the bonus doesn’t go down. does this represent fractiona bonus or is there something else going on here?

thanks again for the game!

Love the game, however i have noticed a major difference since the last upgrade.
It has become alot harder, which is bad because my boyfriend has a major high score and now i cant beat it.
Also there is less 1up scoops so its become harder to make the game last longer.

Anyway totally entertaining cant wait to see what else you have instore.

Modern.

P.S. my fave is Boysenberry icecream :D

I also wrote in my app store review that it would be cool to see a “bonus” area with no vegitables.

I also would love to be able to save my game.

Hi Brandon, I saw the suggestions in your review but I’m not sure I want to change any of the gameplay aspects of the game at this point. As for the save game, Scoops was designed from the beginning to be a quick, casual, pick up and play game not played in multiple sittings. Unfortunately the extra life that was added extended the average game length a bit but it would be extremely difficult for me to add save games at this point.

Ian, I love the game. Out of all the games — all the apps for that matter — on my phone, Scoops is the only one I use on a daily basis. If I had but one request it would be a local daily leaderboard. Kind of in the sense with what you did for the worldwide board, but just for on my phone. I so very rarely get a top score on my leaderboard, and it would me keep track of how many rounds a day I play! Keep up the good work :)

My suggestion is to add “flavor combos” that would give a point bonus upon completion.

Get a chocolate, strawberry and vanilla in order - Neopolitan Bonus!

Get lemon, chocolate, lemon, chocolate - bumblebee bonus (hey, it needs work..)

This would add an extra dimension of fun to the game beyond just going for height as you would try harder to wait for a certain color to come down.

Also, the app does crash if you touch the status bar, i just tried it too.

GREAT GAME, my kids love it too!

PLZ HELP! ian, i downloaded scoops for $1 about a week or two ago. i never synced my ipod to my comp, and when i did, i had A LOT of things to sync. the power went out and i lost EVERYTHING except for what i had on the computer already. i tried “check for purchases” and that didnt work either. now, it wants to charge me $2 for an app that i already paid for. please help me out and send it to me somehow. i really like the game, but i dont want to pay for it twice…

iTunes will never charge you for the same item twice for the same item even if the price changes. It may have a price on the download button but after you click it, a message will say “You have already purchased this item” (poor design I know). On the extremely rare chance it does charge you twice, iTunes will refund your money.

Love the game. Simple and fun. Was wondering, my kids love to play, and they use my iPhone whenever they can. But, when I am at work they can’t. Is there any thought to creating a stand-alone version of Scoops for the Mac (or PC)?

Hi, Scoops is an absolute masterpiece! Simple, fun, good interface, nice colours, great game overall. 5 Stars.

I got an idea to improve: Is it possible to make the rainbow scoops, count as an extra life lost if caught on top of an onion/tomato? And visa versa: if caught on top of a 1up scoop, a rainbow scoop will provide a bonus extra life? As it would make the game more challenging and fun!

Furthermore, maybe bring a few more fruit and veg into it maybe? Make it a bit more interesting.

I hope when you reply to this (if you reply) it emails me the message you reply with, cause otherwise, I’d never find this place again in my history :p

Well done Ian, fantastic game and concept, thumbs up from me!

Hi Ian,

Wow what a great game! I am the only one in the family with and iPod touch and everyone fights to get to play Scoops!!! I read thru the above and didn’t see a definitive answer to the planets? Is Saturn the last one? if so will the rest of the Solar System be added, even Pluto??? ;>) My husband has all the high scores filled with his highest over 219k.

Thanks for a great little game!!

The game truly epitomises everything that the iPhone stands for.

I understand you starting this project out as a game which was ‘quick’, when closed there was to be no save however due to it’s ongoing popularity and additive personality would there be any thought as to a save function in a future version?
